In the second installment of Lincoln Mondy's Black Lives / Black Lungs series, The Journey of a Stolen Leaf, names the theft that birthed the tobacco industry. As colonizers pillaged and stole land from indigenous communities, they also stole their sacred plant, tobacco, turning it into a cash crop. By 1630, over a million and a half pounds of tobacco were being exported from Jamestown every year, setting into motion tobacco as an early justification for slavery and the billion-dollar industry we know today. The film presents a visual and detailed case showing how Big Tobacco has never been far from its origins, and the dangers of allowing an industry unfettered access to dust off their old predatory tactics for new generations. Experts and advocates provide commentary and examples of the industry’s playbook: Buy Black influence, sow doubt in science, and subvert regulation. ABOUT THE FILMMAKER: Lincoln Mondy is the filmmaker behind Black Lives / Black Lungs (2017) and The Journey of a Stolen Leaf (2023). Lincoln designs campaigns, visuals and narratives advancing the health and power of the communities he holds sacred. With deep expertise in public health and reproductive justice, Lincoln leverages his creativity and instincts to inspire participation at scale. A native Texan, he graduated from The George Washington University and proudly serves on the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington (PPMW).
