Pro's Guide to Tactical Tracking | Into The Woods | Episode 2

Initially discovered signs lead Boris and his team into thicker vegetation. Visibility is very low and signs by wild animals in the area are making their job more difficult. The team will have to take a methodical approach with tactics pioneered by the British in the 1960s and used to great effect by the infamous “Tip Toe Boys” – British SAS, Australian SASR and the New Zealand SAS operating in SE Asia in the 1970s. An environment like this can pose a dilemma for the lead tracker. A threat can be very near. He needs to look down to follow the sign on the ground but needs to look up to scan for threats; two jobs he can’t do at the same time. To deal with this, Boris uses a proven method called the 5-Step Track Pursuit Drill. Dense vegetation and forest floors often require the team to track on colour change alone, and it’s easy to lose the sign temporarily or get distracted by foul sign. How the team deals with this is going to determine success or failure. Fortunately, they are familiar with the 4-Step Track Casting Drill.
