St Asaph Walk: City Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Denbighshire, and around five miles south of Rhyl, is the city of St Asaph, or Llanelwy in Welsh. Geographically, St Asaph is situated along the River Elwy, hence its Welsh name translating to 'church on the Elwy'. Its origins go back to the 6th century when Saint Kentigern (also known as Saint Mungo), founder and patron saint of Glasgow, founded a Celtic monastery here. He appointed one of his disciples, namely Saint Asaph, as its bishop. During the 13th century, St Asaph Cathedral was built on the site of the old monastery. It became a target for attacks at various points during its history, including the late 13th century in the wake of Edward I's conquest of Wales, and the early 15th century when it sustained significant damage during the rebellion of Owain Glyndŵr. According to britannica.com, the present cathedral was begun about 1480, completed by 1770, and restored in the 19th century. In 1858 a railway station opened in St Asaph. This formed part of the Vale of Clwyd Railway, which ran between Rhyl to the north and Denbigh to the south. The station closed to passengers in 1955. Today, public transport to St Asaph consists of direct buses from Rhyl, Denbigh and various other nearby settlements. Whilst St Asaph has been historically regarded as a city due to its medieval cathedral and bishop's seat, it was never officially awarded city status until 2012 as part of Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. Since then, its population of just over 3,000 has made it the UK's second smallest city, behind St Davids, also in Wales.
