We check out a Briggs & Stratton V twin 40G777-0400-E1 engine on a Simplicity 2690573 Regent 38" riding mower that will not turn over easily. It hangs up and will not start even though it tries to crank over We diagnose and repair an issue with the starter not turning over the engine. It was brought in because they replaced the starter, battery and solenoid but were still having the issue of the mower sometimes not turning over. One time it would start but the next time it would not spin. It would get stuck on the compression stroke and hang up there. You can do major damage if you repeatedly overwork the starter when having this issue. We find the ACTUAL problem from there and repair it so they do not have any further issues. The customers mechanic quoted a new camshaft thinking the low speed compression release on it was bad. The common symptoms of an issue like this will be the engine turning over slowly, the starter hanging up, engine will not turn over or starting slow. They should have checked this first!
