The plan is to transform Washington, D.C.'s Walter E. Washington Convention Center into a 500 to 1,500-bed hospital, Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite, told reporters at the Pentagon on Friday. "I know the mayor (Mayor Muriel Bowser) was concerned," Semonite said. "We're watching the number." Mayor Muriel Bowser had earlier Friday confirmed the project in a press conference saying that the hospital will be used for coronavirus patients in a "worst-case scenario," but the goal is "to never have to use the convention center." Bowser said the Army Corps of Engineers will begin the task of converting the convention center to a hospital bed facility on Monday, to bring 500 non-intensive care beds to the city by the first week of May. "A couple mayors have asked me, you know, what do you think? And I say, boy, if you have hospital beds that never get used, I don't think that's a problem because you had the ability to be able to take care of the people from your city, " Semonite said.
