Artimino is a hamlet located in the municipality of Carmignano (Prato). It is a walled medieval village located at the top of a Montalbano hill, known for the numerous archaeological, historical and artistic testimonies it houses, but above all for the presence of one of the most important Medici Villas dotting Tuscany. Since the 18th century, various Etruscan findings have been discovered in Artimino. In the 1960s, archaeological evidence was found in the area, indicating the presence of an important Etruscan urban settlement in Artimino. The settlement was likely organized around a decumanus, connecting the walled village to the Medici villa. Necropolises were also found in nearby areas, such as Prato Rosello, and important artifacts from these tombs are housed in the Archaeological Museum of Artimino. The presence of an Etruscan city in Artimino highlights the importance of the area for North-South relations, connecting Tuscia to sub-Apennine settlements and beyond. In the Middle Ages, a castle was documented in Artimino since 1026, where the current settlement was established. The Pieve di San Leonardo, a historic church, was located outside the castle walls. Artimino was a rural municipality with its own statutes and boundaries in the 12th and 14th centuries, initially under the jurisdiction of Pistoia. It was part of the defensive system of Pistoia and was fiercely contested by both Pistoia and Florence. After being conquered and lost multiple times, Artimino was permanently incorporated into Florence's dominion in 1347. The Ricciardi family, the most prominent in the village, moved to Florence, and their lands in Artimino were later acquired by the Medici. In the modern era, the construction of the Medici Villa La Ferdinanda transformed the territory, as the Grand Dukes converted the entire village into a service annex of the villa. The village's houses became predominantly owned by the Grand Duchy, and the villa's stables were attached to the walls and now house the Archaeological Museum. During the Lorraine period, the villa was unused by the court, and Grand Duke Leopold I sold the villa and all the Artimino properties to Marquis Bartolomei. Tuscany is known for its landscapes, history, artistic legacy, and its influence on high culture. It is regarded as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and of the foundations of the Italian language. The prestige established by the Tuscan dialect's use in literature by Dante Alighieri, Petrarch, Giovanni Boccaccio, Niccolò Machiavelli and Francesco Guicciardini led to its subsequent elaboration as the language of culture throughout Italy. It has been home to many figures influential in the history of art and science, and contains well-known museums such as the Uffizi and the Palazzo Pitti. Tuscany is also known for its wines, including Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Morellino di Scansano, Brunello di Montalcino and white Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Having a strong linguistic and cultural identity, it is sometimes considered "a nation within a nation". 📢 SUBSCRIBE to my channel to enjoy these Travels with Me! 😊👉 https://bit.ly/JustWalkingAroundSubsc...
