The material that is concentrated in the tree rows serves as a great biological stimulant, shades the soil to protect roots and microbes from the heat of the sun and contributes some to weed suppression (but not enough to eliminate herbicides). We set the flail to its highest height to encourage quick regrowth of the cover crop. Our goal is to maximize the biomass produced by the cover crop over the entire season. If we get greedy and try to mow the cover crop to the ground the cover crop will not recover quickly, if at all, and the amount of season-long biomass produced will be reduced drastically.
