FACEBOOK : / danielsgamevault ------- Zuma Deluxe by PopCap Games is a game which truly has some "balls" ! It's probably one of the most universally recognized PC game ever. I mean anybody with a computer in this whole world has probably played this game at least once ! You control a frog with the objective of exploring 13 different mayan temples by eliminating every last of the colored balls that roll on screen before they reach the drain. It's not entirely clear what the name "Zuma" actually refers to. Many seem to think Zuma is the name of the frog, though the game never actually mentions this. Zuma could also be the human shaman priest who appears on the menu screen, or perhaps even some unseen god whom the temples belong to, while the frog simply has no real name. In each level, your frog is surrounded by a track of different shapes and lengths and random colored balls roll on screen along this track. There's a drain in the shape of a skull at its end and your objective is to eliminate all the balls as quickly as possible before they reach the skull. If they do so, you lose a life shown in the top left - you start off with 2 and get an extra one every 50k points. The speed of the balls rolling towards the skull obviously increases as the game progresses and there will also be levels with 2 separate tracks and two drains, making it harder to keep up ! The tracks are usually laid out in such a way that they surround the frog on all sides, leaving no opening where you may discard unwanted balls off-screen, at least not easily. You aim where you want the frog to shoot by pointing with the mouse and fire the ball it has in its mouth by clicking. The gem on the frog's back shows the color of the next ball and you can swap the current ball with the next one by right-clicking. Matching together at least 3 balls of the same color causes that group to explode and leave a gap in the string. If the balls on either side of the gap are not the same color, the end of the string simply stands there until more balls roll in and close the gap. If they happen to be the same color, the two ends slam together to close the gap and if they are also 3 balls or more of the same color, they'll once again explode and you get a combo bonus. Depending on how the balls happen to be arranged, you can get a double, triple or even longer combo if you can keep this domino effect going. Combos are very hard to lay out and plan in advance - it's mostly luck. Balls keep coming on screen until the gauge at the top of the screen fills up: the more points you get, the faster it fills up, until it eventually turns green and no more balls roll in at that point, so all that's left is to get rid of the ones still on screen. When they're all gone, you move on to the next level. Occasionally, a gold coin will show up somewhere on the screen. It always appears behind the balls, so the only way to reach it is to create an opening where the coin is, then quickly shoot a ball through it to hit the coin. You have to be fast because the coin stays on screen for only a few seconds and if the balls on the sides of the gap you just opened are the same color, the gap will try to slam shut and block your next shot from hitting the coin. The best strategy is to double click the mouse button so that the first ball flies in and opens the gap and the second one hits the coin immediately after. Aside from giving you points, coins also fill up the ball gauge faster. Some powerups also appear randomly on the balls themselves and are activated when the ball carrying them is destroyed: the arrow pointing backwards reverses the direction of the balls for a few seconds, making them roll away from the drain. A ball with two vertical bars in the shape of the "PAUSE" symbol slows the balls down. A flashing circle in the middle of a ball acts as a bomb and destroys other balls around it and finally the symbol with two circles gives your frog a blue laser sight, making it easier to aim, especially at long distances. Anyway, no need to explain the game in such detail - I mean anyone who isn't brain-dead could probably play Zuma right away ! All I can say is that the game is fun, entertaining and amazingly addicting, despite its mere simplicity. It's very intense because you can never take a break - you have to constantly react and keep your eyes and mind alert, so if you feel sleepy at work or in class (and you have access to a computer), play some Zuma and you'll be back to life in minutes. One minor complaint is that the soundtracks could've used more variety, since it's essentially a single track in the whole game, aside from the menu screen, but because you'll be so focused on the game, you'll likely not even notice it. Zuma Deluxe is truly "balls to the wall" - try it out ! I guarantee you'll have a hard time turning off the computer ! This one gets the official "Danny's Game Vault" seal of approval as an all-time classic !
