Nearly 100 years ago, the Royal Canadian Legion was established to support the thousands of First World War veterans who had returned from European battlefields. Legion halls soon became the centrepieces of communities across the country. But today, membership is less than half of what it was in the early 1980s, and branches have often struggled to remain relevant and attract the next generation of veterans.
