A major mistake US international students make when filing their tax return is using free online tax filing services from big companies such as H&R block & TurboTax. The free online tax services provided by these companies cater to US resident aliens for tax purposes and US citizens, and not to non-resident aliens for tax purposes. To avoid making this tax filing mistake, you can either i) Print, prepare and submit the 1040 NR along with Form 8843 to the IRS for free ii) Prepare the 1040 NR for free using special tax filing services provided by your university for it’s international students, after which you can submit the 1040 NR and Form 8843 to the IRS iii) Alternatively, you could also consider a paid option with a tax preparation software such as Sprintax.
