Another Great Smoky Mountain pattern from Don Kirk's book on the region, the Smith Fly is a western North Carolina original. Said to be from the Spruce Pine area of the state, this very old fly pattern's dual hackles make it an excellent imitation of the region's October caddis. Outside of the fall, this can be a great attractor dry fly. This can also be found in Bill Everhardt's Appalachian Series. Hook: #10-16 dry fly Thread: Black Tail: Golden pheasant tippets Rear hackle: Brown rooster Body: Orange floss Wings: Mallard or wood duck flank feathers Front hackle: Brown or grizzly rooster Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible.
