Uttar Pradesh is set to decide the fate of 623 candidates in the first phase of 18th legislative assembly election in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. Nearly 2.28 crore voters (nearly 15% of the total registered 15.02 crore electorate), including 1.24 crore men, 1.04 crore women and 1,448 third gender, are expected to cast their votes. The BJP had won 53 of these 58 seats in 2017 at a strike rate of little over 91%. Hence, the stakes in Round 1 of polling are significant for the saffron party if it hopes to come anywhere close to its 2017 performance.
