DEAD OR ALIVE Turn Around And Count 2 Ten (Don't Look Behind Mix)

"Turn Around And Count 2 Ten" was the first single taken from Dead Or Alive's "Nude" album. It was a MAJOR hit in Japan- 17 weeks at #1, spending more time and selling better than any previous release in that country. It did not do as well back home in England (peaked at #70), and wasn't even released in the United States. It did place in the Top 40 in Australia- peaking at #30. There was controversy surrounding different aspects of the release; artwork was banned, the 12" remix was withdrawn, even the video was restricted when it could be played. Add to it that the band was fragmenting behind the scenes- Mike Percy and Tim Lever left the band at some point following the album's Japanese release in December, and the rest of the world's August release the following year. Credits were changed to reflect that band line-up and artwork was changed. Not just for the credits, but also because original Japanese version had artwork issues of its own. The hilt of a knife tattoo on Pete's stomach was placed in way that it resembled an erect phallus!), it's no wonder this was a complicated time for the band. None of that takes away from the quality of the music. This song, and the entire album, was written by the band self-produced by Pete and Steve. Shedding their glittery pop sounds of Stock, Aitken & Waterman, this record dips its feet into house, freestyle, and even Motown. This single is probably the one track that most resembled the previous two albums, but there's nothing there that had a driving bassline like this does, or combined disco strings with world beat percussion styles. I used multiple versions of the song to make this anthemic version; the original 7", the remix 12" (Disco Dream version), the CD-single only "Instru-MENTAL" version, as well as drums, bass, and acapella versions created with a splitter program. Despite using very high-quality remastered files of the single version to get those tracks, I was not happy with the way they came out- especially the acapella. So, I relied less on those stems than I imagined when planning this mix. But, those issues forced me to be creative in OTHER ways, and the end result is fun, if not exactly what I had intended.
