She represents an aspect of Parashakti, having a host of Puranic legends and timeless indigenous lores associated with. The sanctum dedicated to Zeashta Devi, locally known as Zeathyaer is located in the picturesque and soul pleasing idyllic ambience at the foothills of the Jyeshtrudra mountain range, which once formed a part of the once famous Tapovan hills extending from the present day Harwan to the now known Dachigam. The Goddess, spelled as Jyeshta or Jyestha,is also known by the alternative names of Alakshami or Moodevi.Sometimes,She is also identified with Dhumawati .As per the Puranic thought, Her Pradhurbhaav is linked with the Cosmic Samundar manthan and is said to have appeared before the Goddess Lakshmi, hence the very name Jyeshta, indicating being elder to Her divine sibling. The Goddess Zeashta represents an antithesis of the attributes of the Goddess Lakshmi. She accordingly is identified with the mundane elements of adversity, slackers, penury, scarcity, agony, jealousy and bickering. In textual representation,She is said to have black or red complexion with a red drape and raised nose. She is also portrayed under a crow banner and is associated with a broom and sometimes with a winnower. Both of them have symbolic representation both in the social lore and the native belief system of Kashmir. In the Tantric thought, She is portrayed as fearsome but not terrifying. In Shardatilak Tantra,Jyeshta Goddess is identified with Dhumawati. She is also said to be embodiment of Tamsic Gunas for being associated with the elements of obscurity, incomprehension, inauspiciousness and shallowness of thoughts. Her shrines are usually in the forests, lonesome and isolated places. The worshippers as per one thought are mostly said to be renounced,Tantrikas and generally females. In accordance with it turmeric mixed rice called locally Taher and Charvan are the most favored offerings. She is prayed and invoked to remain away from the dwellings and mundane lives. In the yester years,it was an annual ritual for the females to visit the Zeathyaer shrine on the seven Thursdays starting from the concluding Thursday of Vaisakh to the first two Thursdays of the Ashad month. As per an indigenous belief,it would bestow the religious merits of having performed the shrine yatra for the entire year. The Goddess Zeashta is said to have manifested here in Jal roopa in the form of a sacred pond.In yester times, the devotees before entry in the sanctum, would have purifactory bath at the bathing spots at the entrance, the water of which was supposed to trickle down from the holy Nag above. The observance of Havan on today is an integral part of the shrine tradition. The Goddess is prayed to keep free from all sorts of delusion, negativities, inauspiciousness and misfortunes of the mundane life.
