High Peak Eric Ball Silk Brass Tony Wyatt

.Eric Ball composed his well-loved High Peak in 1969, during a prolific period of brass band creativity for him, and he provides a four-part programme for what he calls a Rhapsody for Brass Band: Vision; Aspiration; Ascent and Attainment. In a bold start, a single euphonium declares ‘Behold the highest peak, glittering in the sun’ and there follows a nuanced and subtle depiction of light, colour and cloud at the foot of a mountain. The cornet introduces the ‘aspiration’ theme: ‘I will lift up mine eyes to the hills’ and the theme undergoes a typical Eric Ball development, in conjunction with a more agile fugue theme – limbering up for the challenge to come. Throughout the ascent Ball uses a constant tread of rising steps throughout the band and, after what the composer calls some ‘fanciful Alpine effects’, a violent storm breaks over the climber. A brief silence and then, again in the composer’s words: ‘suddenly, the summit! The breathtaking view evoking ecstasy and awe’. The ‘aspiration’ theme takes on a brightly sunny tone and as the climber basks in the golden rays of his achievement, the soprano cornet sparkles dazzlingly on the highest peak of all.
