The engine starter motor is located on left side of engine below intake manifold. It is not the easiest part to access on your BMW. You will have to remove the intake manifold on your E90 to access it. Set aside most of a day to do the repair and see our tech article on removing your intake manifold, so you have the parts you need to reassemble your car the same day. There's nothing worse than being one part shy of being able to get your car running. When a starter fails, your engine will not start. You may turn the key and attempt to crank the engine but nothing happens or maybe only a few clicks. It is important to be sure your battery is fully charged and in good condition before condemning your starter. The mounting bolts for the starter are made out of aluminum and have to be replaced every time they are removed. Be sure to first disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
