Public Hearing Set as Texas A&M, Local Well Owners Face Off Over Water Rights

The Brazos Valley Groundwater Conservation District is set to hold a public hearing Thursday to consider Texas A&M University’s application for a new groundwater production permit, a proposal that has drawn significant opposition from local landowners and groundwater rights holders. The hearing, scheduled for 2 p.m. at the District Office in Hearne, will address Texas A&M’s request for a drilling and operating permit to extract up to 1,934.8 acre-feet of water per year from the Simsboro Aquifer. The university plans to use the water for its RELLIS Campus, a growing research and educational facility in Bryan. The proposed well, known as Well #9, is expected to pump at a maximum rate of 2,800 gallons per minute.
