Two years after narrowly losing a decision to Keith Thurman in their WBA welterweight title bout, a resolute Porter returned to the same ring at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center to claim another 147-pound championship. Porter secured a victory over Danny Garcia by unanimous decision in a fiercely contested 12-round battle, clinching the vacant WBC welterweight title in the main event of a 13-bout card that attracted an announced crowd of 13,058. Judges Don Ackerman (116-112), Julie Lederman (115-113), and Eric Marlinski (115-113) all favored Porter in their scoring. “I always say I don’t make predictions,” Porter remarked. “But this time, I made a bold one and I delivered. I said I wouldn’t leave New York without this belt, and here I am.” The 30-year-old Porter (29-2-1, 17 KOs), a resident of Las Vegas raised in Akron, Ohio, secured his second welterweight championship. He previously held the IBF welterweight title for eight months before relinquishing it to Kell Brook via majority decision in August 2014. Philadelphia’s Garcia (35-2, 20 KOs) suffered another close defeat in a welterweight title bout at Barclays Center, marking his second loss at the venue in 18 months. He previously lost the WBC title, which he failed to reclaim on Saturday night, to Keith Thurman by split decision in their 12-round, 147-pound championship unification fight in March 2017. “I believed I did enough to win,” Garcia expressed. “It was a tight fight, but the judges didn’t see it my way.
