PAVED PARADISE official trailer

Organic and wild-life friendly agriculture have been at the forefront of the European transition towards a more sustainable food production. The way to do that, popular ngo's claim, is by land sharing. Pesticide-free, flower-rich fields full of free roaming animals - nature and food production wrapped into one perfect picture. Contrary to these popular beliefs and romantic notions, science paints a different picture. The number one reason for the dire state of biodiversity is the destruction and fragmentation of natural habitats. In order to produce enough food to feed the world population, we have claimed more and more land at the expense of plants and animals. As organic yields are significantly lower than conventional ones, the territory of flora and fauna is reduced even further. To make matters worse, over the next 30 years the world population will grow from 7 to 10 billion people. To feed them, farmers in 2050 need to produce 70 percent more food. The current land sharing course is therefore unsustainable, no matter how romantic it sounds. Enter land sparing: a radical, but simple alternative. The more food we produce on less land, the more space there will be for plants and animals to thrive. If we intensify and concentrate our food production in the most fertile places, we will be able to rewild more than half of Europe! This means we can create new wildlife reserves with room for animals, trees, mushrooms and bees. Could this work? Is this a viable option to look into? And if so, why don’t we? To find the much needed answers, Karsten de Vreugd and Hidde Boersma go on a worldwide quest to find out what the most sustainable food production really looks like, and what radical choices the world will have to make in order to provide everybody on this planet a healthy and sufficient diet & a prospering environment.
