An overview of the ignition systems on Iron Sportsters and K-Models from 1952 to 1985. I state that you can put the 1980-85 module on 1971-1979 bikes, but the modern module might not work when you kickstart the bike. In 1980 and later, there was no kick-starter on the engine. Biggest problem with mechanical points are the advance flyweights egging out at the pivot and hitting the back of the points plate. This will break the 1/4-28 bolt holding the advance unit to the camshaft, and kill your bike on the spot. This only seems to be a severe problem in cone motors, 1971-1979, the old "distributor" aka circuit breakers in early bikes 1965-1970 have weights that seem to last much longer, since they are sitting horizontally and not subject to gravity pulling and pushing on the weights as they rotate.
