Personality and Language Learning

In so many ways personality is the key individual difference, and indeed, in his 2009 Hans Eysenck Memorial Lecture, Philip Corr (2007) rightly highlighted the lay perception that psychology is essentially the study of personality. Personality can be defined as one's "whole character and nature". In other words, personality represents those characteristics of the person that "account for consistent patterns of feeling, thinking, and behaving". This video will highlight the structure of personality proposed by Costa and McCrae called the "Big Five" model, sometimes also known as the Five-Factor model. The "Big Five" model consists of five basic personality dimensions namely: 1. Openness 2. Conscientiousness 3. Extraversion - Introversion 4. Agreeableness 5. Neuroticism - Emotional Stability In addition, personality variables and types are important factors in determining our behavioral in general, and from an educational perspective the real question is how such dispositions affect learning.
