The #SaveMaldives Campaign presents this short documentary about ecological and environmental loss in the Maldives. It tells the stories of loss felt by communities due to widespread and unchecked dredging, reclamation and deforestation causing permanent and irreversible ecological and environmental degradation of islands. Unsustainable and maladaptive coastal modifications are exposing communities and residents of islands across the Maldives to ecological and climate disasters. Maldives is on the front line of global climate change impacts. However, the government of Maldives continues to cause irreparable harm to the country's marine and terrestrial ecosystems, biodiversity and environment as part of its destructive view of 'development'. This documentary seeks to raise public awareness of the permanence of the losses resulting from coastal maladaptive practices and the increased risks they pose to people, communities, livelihoods, quality of life, stability, security and human well being. Policymakers and consecutive governments continually choose the permanent destruction of ecosystems which is framed as synonymous with development. Public awareness of the adverse impacts of these activities and the direct exposure to future endangerment of communities is extremely low. We hope this video will help to increase public awareness, especially in the Maldives, about the serious danger of the losses communities are being subjected to by the prevailing destructive form of development. This kind of development is undermining sustainable livelihoods, natural climate defences, resilience and the ability of future generations to live in these communities. We hope you will help to spread the word about this loss - everywhere. We thank Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW) for their support towards this production. #SaveMaldives September 2024
