How we treat ourselves will influence our treatment of others and how we treat others influences how we treat ourselves. In Buddhist traditions, our wellbeing and the wellbeing of others, all beings, and even the planet, are interconnected and dependent on one another. For this reason, compassion, the desire to understand and relieve suffering wherever possible, is closely tied to mindfulness. On the other hand, our brain also evolved to avoid threat and seek out reward, leading to fear, anxiety, anger, competition and aggression. These conflicting desires, thoughts and emotions also make compassion a choice requiring effort, focusing our attention, thoughts and behavior on understanding and relieving suffering. With mindfulness, we recognize (with kindness) where our mind naturally goes and learn to direct our attention in compassionate ways.
