Scriven寫給病中母親的一封信，1868年由美國人Charles Crozat Converse譜成曲，成為廣受歡迎的福音歌曲。20世紀錄唱過這首歌的歌手多不勝數，從Bing Crosby到Ella Fitzgerald到Aretha Franklin到Ike & Tina Turner到Dolly Parton到近年的Alan Jackson，是一份橫跨爵士、民謠、靈魂、鄉村樂史的點將錄。 這首歌在19世紀末傳到日本，譯成日文在教徒間傳唱，又在1910年編入文部省《尋常小學讀本唱歌》，重填新詞，成為「星の界」。直到現在，都是日本人經常在婚禮演唱的歌。 當然在台灣、香港，也有台語版、粵語版的聖歌。大作曲家蕭泰然先生，也曾為這首聖歌的原詞重新譜曲。 你是不是對這首曲子耳熟能詳，朗朗上口呢? The song "野餐" (Picnic), which we learned in our music textbooks when we were young, is actually a hymn with a long and winding history. Its origins trace back to a letter written by Joseph M. Scriven, an Irish immigrant to Canada, to his ailing mother in 1855. In 1868, American composer Charles Crozat Converse set it to music, creating a widely popular gospel song. Over the 20th century, numerous singers have recorded this song, spanning genres from jazz and folk to soul and country, including Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Ike & Tina Turner, Dolly Parton, and more recently, Alan Jackson. The song made its way to Japan at the end of the 19th century, where it was translated into Japanese and became popular among believers. In 1910, it was included in the Ministry of Education's "Common Primary School Reader's Songbook" with new lyrics, becoming "星の界" (Starry Skies). Even today, it remains a popular choice for weddings in Japan. Of course, there are also Taiwanese and Cantonese versions of this hymn in Taiwan and Hong Kong. The renowned composer Xiao Tairan once re-arranged the original lyrics for this hymn.
