A rare sighting of an endangered Southern Right Whale, mother and calf close to shore at Avoca Beach on the Central Coast of NSW, Australia. Taken on 18 August 2023 with the x7 Optical Zoom on the DJI Mavic 3. The whales were very close to shore about 50 meters from the beach, resting and feeding. Merrillie Redden Photography | https://www.merrillie.com MORE INFORMATION... ORCCA Australia "If they are in close to shore they are there to rest. These animals are incredibly sensitive! Mothers with calves have an EXCLUSION ZONE of 300m and an exclusion zone for DRONES of 100m." / orrcaaustralia Marine Wildlife Team, NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service The imagery allows us to look at individual animals via their unique facial markings (callosities), to track their habitat use, body condition, check for injuries or entanglements, and also look at some life history data as the animals are likely to return on their 3 to 5 yearly calving cycles, and we can see how successful some of the mothers are. In terms of how unique this event was in NSW, the biggest single season of sightings (since prior to the 1800 to 1830’s whaling industry) was last year when we documented 10 adults of which 5 had calves,… this year so far we know of 6 adults and just 2 calves. Prior to 2021, we rarely recorded more than 2 or 3 adults in a season. The total SE Australian population is a genetically distinct group, for whom the mothers develop fidelity to specific sites, and so we hope by protecting these mothers and calves, we will be encouraging them to feel like NSW waters are a place they should come back to each calving cycle.
