1927 Great Mississippi River Flood (video restoration and colorization). The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was the most destructive river flood in the history of the United States, with 27,000 square miles (70,000 km2) inundated in depths of up to 30 feet (9 m) over the course of several months in early 1927. It is restored from video recordings of the original two-reel silent films taken during the 1927 Mississippi River flood. The films were later edited into a narrative to describe the flood and the flood refugee support services provided by the federal government. The video depicts what are today considered culturally insensitive scenes. They depict ethnic and racial prejudices that were commonplace at the time. The restoration retains these scenes as created for historical purposes. The restoration includes the text narratives, frame edits to fix damage, clean-up of dust, flicker and other anomalies, lighting adjustments, stabilization, masking to restore the original aspect ratio and eliminate frame edge flicker and bounce, mood music selection from 1927, and AI colorization. The restoration resulted in a longer video and cannot be considered historically accurate. However, the film retains its historical intent.
