Kenya is a country in East Africa, bordering the Indian Ocean in south east, neighboring countries are Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. With a current population of more than 53 million in the 2023, Kenya is the 27th most populous country in the world and 7th most populous in Africa. Nairobi is the capital and the largest city of Kenya. The name comes from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nyrobi, which translates to "cool water", a reference to the Nairobi River which flows through the city. Nairobi is famous for being the only capital city that contains a national park. The city's proximity to Nairobi National Park has given it the name of 'the safari capital of Kenya. Kenya is one of the most diverse countries in the world. It has over 150 ethnic groups. However, Kenya is commonly recognized to have only 42 official tribes. The largest ethnic group in Kenya is the Kikuyu people. Other major ethnic groups include the Luhya, Luo, Kalenjin, Kamba, Kisii and Meru. Each tribe is further divided into clans or sub-tribes, sometimes understood as a family. The Maasai are a Nilotic ethnic group inhabiting northern, central and southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. They are among the best-known local populations internationally due to their residence near the many game parks of the African Great Lakes and their distinctive customs and dress. Some of the dances you can experience include the impressive Maasai Eunoto dance, the Kikuyu Circumcision dance, the spectacular Chuka drummers, Coastal Sengenya and Gonda dances, Swahili Taarab, NubiDholuka dance and many more.
