বাঙালির বারো মাসে তেরো পার্বণ। কিন্তু সেইসব আচার-অনুষ্ঠানের মধ্যে জৈষ্ঠ্য মাসের পার্বণ জামাইষষ্ঠী ধারে-ভারে একটু যেন পিছিয়ে। আজ বাঙালি হিন্দুদের কাছে জামাইষষ্ঠী নিতান্ত ভুরিভোজের একটা উৎসব। সাজেগুজে শ্বশুরবাড়ি গিয়ে জামাইয়ের আদর-আপ্যায়ন। কিন্তু এটা জামাইষষ্ঠীর লঘু একটা রূপ। জামাইষষ্ঠীর পিছনে রয়েছে অরণ্যষষ্ঠীর ব্রত। তারও পিছনে রয়েছে আমাদের মাতৃকা-উপাসনার এক আবহমান সংস্কৃতি, দেবী ষষ্ঠীর পুজো। হরপ্পা-সিন্ধু সভ্যতার সময় থেকেই যিনি প্রজনন ও সন্তানরক্ষার দেবী। প্রত্যেক মাসে দেবী ষষ্ঠীর নানা ব্রত এখনো পালিত হয় মেয়েদের মধ্যে। এয়োস্ত্রীদের তেমনই এক জৈষ্ঠ্যকালীন ব্রত 'জাময়ষষ্ঠী' যার অপভ্রংশ আজ হয়েছে 'জামাইষষ্ঠী'। বলাবাহুল্য এই নতুন রীতিরেওয়াজ উনিশ শতকের কলকাতা ও বাংলার নাগরিক সমাজের 'বাবু কালচারে'র দান। আজকের পর্বে রইল এই 'জামাইষষ্ঠী'র ইতিহাস। যা আমাদের বাংলার ইতিহাসের উপেক্ষিত এক অধ্যায়। Bengalis have thirteen festivals in twelve months. Among these rituals and ceremonies, the festival of Jamai Shasthi in the month of Jyeshtha seems somewhat less prominent. Today, for Bengali Hindus, Jamai Shasthi is primarily a festival of feasting. It involves dressing up and going to the in-laws' house to pamper the son-in-law. However, this is a lighter form of Jamai Shasthi. Behind Jamai Shasthi lies the vow of Aranya Shasthi. Beyond that is an ancient tradition of worshiping our goddess, Devi Shasthi, who has been the goddess of fertility and child protection since the Harappa-Indus Valley Civilization. Even now, various vows to Devi Shasthi are observed by women every month. One such vow observed by married women during Jyeshtha is 'Jamay Shasthi,' which has colloquially become 'Jamai Shasthi.' Needless to say, this new custom is a contribution of the 'Babu culture' of 19th century Kolkata and Bengal's urban society.
