"Retracing Byker" with Vernon Gracie

In June 2022 Northern Cultural Projects, in partnership with the Oral History Unit and Collective, Architecture, Planning and Landscape and the Centre for Heritage at Newcastle University, organised a visit by architect Vernon Gracie, Ralph Erskine's business partner and long-term collaborator, to the Byker estate. Gracie had been the executing architect during the Byker redevelopment 1969-82. During his visit he went on a walkabout, visited his landmark building Tom Collins House, met Byker Community Trust (Karbon Homes) staff and local politicians, and had conversations with residents along the way, many of whom have lived here for over 40 years. The engagement event was part of the “Byker Living Archives” pilot project. One of its ambitions is the development of a resident-led “Living Archive” on the estate.
