Magma is Moving Underneath New Mexico; The Socorro Magma Body

Underneath a section of New Mexico is one of the largest magma chambers on the planet. Containing more than 84 cubic miles or 350 cubic kilometers of material, it is located underneath the town of Socorro. This large body of magma is actively growing, and is likely to one day form a new volcano with eruptions similar to those seen at the Zuni Bandera volcanic field. This video will discuss this large magma body, and mention its associated earthquakes. This image was cropped, overlaid with text, and overlaid with GeologyHub made graphics (the image border & the GeologyHub logo). Note: This video's thumbnail image does not represent a photo of the Socorro Magma Body as no actual photos exist of it due to its depth. Instead, it displays a 2018 photograph of one of the Kilauea volcano's lava flows in Hawaii.
