Turbo Jet Engine 3D Printed In Only Two Parts

Gas turbine engines are typically complex pieces of machinery, consisting of hundreds or thousands of parts that must be sourced and assembled. Technion Israel Institute of Technology, in collaboration with partners (including PTC, von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics and Izmir Katip Celebi University), undertook a project to see if a turbojet engine could instead be made from just two components, manufactured in one build through laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). The result is the engine seen in this episode, with a monolithic rotor and stationary shell both produced from Inconel 718 in a single build. While there are a few other elements required to make the engine functional, producing the bulk of its structure additively has potential benefits in terms of reducing engine cost, shortening supply chains, and even distributing or licensing production of similar gas turbine engines in the future. This pre-assembled turbojet engine was the 2023 winner for Best Proof-of-Concept Part in The Cool Parts Showcase. This episode of The Cool Parts Show brought to you by Carpenter Additive. https://www.carpenteradditive.com/ FOR ALL ACCESS MEMBERS: One struggle of developing the engine was maintaining a gap between the rotating and stationary components to accommodate a hydrostatic bearing. Future work will involve other types of bearings. Sign up and watch this month's exclusive Extra here: https://www.additivemanufacturing.med...
