Can Incisional Hernia heal by itself? - Dr. Sathish N

Cannot heal by itself because it is a defect in the anterior abdominal wall. The anterior abdominal wall has the fascia and the sheath. What happens is because there is a defect in the sheath, there is no way that the hoe or the defect closes on its own. It has to be repaired by surgical methods. There are lot of patients who come asking if it can be closed by tablets, it is impossible. Because of the defect in the sheath. The only way that can help in incisional hernia treatment, if the defect is very small, then we would be putting a few stiches and sending the patent away. If the patient is lucky, he will never come back with a hernia again. But if the patient is unlucky, like in some patients there is a Protein C and S deficiency and they start their work such that they have to work with weights. In such patients simple repair, or an anatomical closure is not sufficient, we would have to out a mesh and that would have to be lifelong. The mesh would tend to get impregnated into the body tissues and as a result of which it gives an extra support to the weak area that had existed. Once an incisional hernia has been repaired it is seen that the patients commonly develop a groin hernia. That is no relation between the incisional hernia and groin hernia. Some patients are prone to develop hernia all through their lives and once an incisional hernia or a groin hernia has been repaired, they are unlikely to get the hernia back in the same place.
