As it turns out, Mary Tyler Moore and Ed Asner got to perform one of the most memorable scenes in sitcom history twice: First for a test run that aired only once, on a 1970 ABC Fall Preview show—and again, for real, on the series premiere, Sept. 19, 1970. Here they are, side-by-side, and it's clear that in the earlier version both stars are still figuring out just who their characters are. Mary seems a bit meeker; maybe a tad too Laura Petri-ish. And Asner displays almost none of the gruff, boozing bombast that Lou Grant would become known for (he also appears a bit thinner, doesn't he?).
