For our second foray into the Simpson desert, we decided that The Madigan Line would be our main focus. To achieve that, we crossed from east to west from Birdsville to Mt Dare via the WAA Line, to put us in the starting position to follow Cecil Madigan's 1939 route. In Part 1 we depart Mt Dare to be confronted with the worst bulldust I have ever seen as the track follows the course (and floodplain) of the Finke River. It was closed not long after we went through and all future traffic heading this way would have to detour via New Crown. We have previously visited Madigan's Camps 1 and 2, and so plotted our course to the next one in the series (that permits are able to be issued for), that being Camp 5, and then finish the day's travel and have our first night at Madigan's Camp 6.
