Oil painting of the Mountaineers' Cemetery in Zermatt

I was lucky enough to visit Zermatt in Switzerland earlier this year. All the surrounding peaks are breathtaking but it is the beautiful Matterhorn that dominates the view from the village. The first successful ascent of the mountain took place in 1865 by a team of seven climbers. Only three survived the descent. The seven climbers were: Edward Whymper, Lord Francis Douglas, the Reverend Charles Hudson, Douglas Hadow, and guides, Michel Croz, Peter Taugwalder and his son of the same name. The Mountaineers' Cemetery in the heart of Zermatt is a memorial to all climbers who have lost their lives in the nearby mountains. The graves and memorials of the 1865 climbers look toward the Matterhorn. The Taugwalders' survived the climb along with Whymper. They both died from natural causes. Next to their graves lays Croz. Hadow and Hudson are now buried at the English Church nearby but their memorial remains at the Cemetery. Lord Francis Douglas was never released by the mountain and so has no grave. Whymper survived to the age of 71 and is buried in the town where he died; Chamonix, France. I felt compelled to paint this scene as it is so poignant. I thought I would upload it to YouTube as I find watching other artists create their work both inspiring and relaxing. I hope you gain something from my video too. The truth is, I painted this very inefficiently indeed; this was due to my over enthusiasm in starting and not taking enough time to plan properly. Lesson learned! I used Michael Harding oil paints with a very limited palette of: - yellow lake - scarlet lake - ultramarine blue - titanium white The mediums I used were solvent (Winsor and Newton's Sansodor) and Liquin Original (Winsor and Newton). I like the challenge of colour mixing using a very limited palette, I also think the limited palette creates harmony to the overall painting. I painted on wooden board, primed with three coats of gesso and a mid tone blue/grey acrylic paint. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this very rough and ready video which was filmed on my phone and edited with Adobe's Premiere Rush. (I am not really set up for professional filming so just used what I already had.) Andrea x
