Using gallows brackets is one method of safely removing a chimney breast. But before a chimney breast can be removed, a structural engineer needs to visit the property to do a site survey. The engineer will calculate the thickness of the steel needed for the gallows brackets (dependant on the weight they need to support). We used gallows brackets for this project because the chimney breast was being removed on both floors of the property. If the chimney breast is being removed on only the downstairs floor, a steel would be a better option as the remaining weight to be supported is much greater.
