This concert occurred on a warm Tuesday night on the upper east side of Manhattan in the fence-enclosed outdoor gardens of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum of Decorative Arts and Design (now called Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum). The museum is in the former NYC residence of Andrew Carnegie, and the grounds. accordingly, were a very nice location to see some outdoor jazz. Between Motian's batterie, Frisell's arsenal of electric guitar pyrotechnics and Lovano's Coltranesque wailing, the band more than held its own against the police and fire sirens, car horns and other ambient sounds one hears on the streets of NYC. Frisell and Motian in particular were fiery that night. This lineup was not common. Essentially it was the intermediary between the classic Motian Trio and the quintet that had recorded a few albums before Motian, Frisell and Lovano realized that another sax and bass held them back from their full potential. Not to be mean to Drewes, who is a fine player, but he doesn't add much to the this lineup. Motian was an amazing composer, and most of the tunes here are his. I can't think of another drummer with a comparable level of composition output. Tony Williams wrote some nice things, but Motian wrote dozens of great tunes.
