During the summer of 1986, my good friend Alan travelled around the UK, armed with a hefty VHS camera, recording the railway scene. I'm delighted to be able to bring you the results. The next Episode of Alan's 1986 odyssey takes him to Cornwall. Part 16 begins with a couple of night shots at Reading, including 50008 Thunderer. Alan presumably boarded the ‘Night Riviera’ there, the 2359 Paddington to Penzance overnight sleeper service, because the next shot we see is 50039 Implacable departing on this train from Bodmin Parkway station in Cornwall. Alan captures various workings around Bodmin, including a class 37 on an eastbound train of china clay 'hoods', an up HST Intercity 125 service to Paddington, 50001 Dreadnought, bound for Penzance, and a fabulous shot of 50042 'Triumph', filmed from a hillside just west of the station. Turn up the sound for that one; English Electric heaven! Alan then moves on to Lostwithiel where we see 47085 Mammoth leaving the loops with china clay hoods. Class 50s galore feature at Lostwithiel, with 50028 Renown on a stopping service whilst 50046 Ajax and another unidentified Hoover blast through non-stop. Several 37s, including 37232 and 37235, have charge of yet more china clay hoods before Alan moves on to Par, where we see 37207 William Cookworthy on another train of these unique wagons. Finally, an unidentified class 50 thrashes away from the station stop with a rake of Mk 1 coaches bound for Plymouth. I'd love to hear your thoughts about this video. Please leave comments below.
