Owners of the 2018 Trek Remedy 8 (and other trek products) Do you have a Bontrager Rapid Drive hub and wish it had more engagement? Well, have I got news for you! (note: please pull off your driver BEFORE ordering parts as I'm not 100% sure all hubs can be upgraded) I noticed when I was doing routine maintenance that my Bontrager hub had allocations for 6 pawls - but only three were installed. I searched online and found that this is actually a documented upgrade and that the driver body is shared between many Bontrager hubs. I called my local Trek store and got the P/Ns for new pawls and springs then waited about a week for them to get in. All in all it's about 42 bucks to buy the new parts - expect about 50 or 60 dollars total if you have a shop install. Installing the 3 additional pawls doubled the points of engagement from 54 to 108 and halved the engagement angle from 6.6 to 3.3 degrees. The hub also sounds mean now, about the same as an Industry 9 hub (the I9 hub actually uses a different mechanism for engagement but the loudness and quality is similar). For only 42 dollars, this made my hubs worth reusing and I'm contemplating on relacing them to carbon rims next season. What other tech videos should I produce? Let me know in the comments below!
