Chicken Pox is increasing right now, especially in India Here’s what you need to know: Chicken Pox is spread by skin to skin contact and aerosols/sneezing coughing Symptoms start with in 15 days after exposure First symptoms are: fever, fatigue, body aches, sore throat, loss of appetite Lesions usually appear  with in 24 hours of symptoms and will be intensely itchy! They begin as red spots that become large and eventually appear like fluid filled blisters. After this then end up crusted over like scabs New lesions usually stop forming by day 4 and will be mostly crusted over by day 6 and will fall off in 1-2 weeks. Unvaccinated people can expect 250-500 lesions by day 4. You might notice some dark discoloration but this usually heals on its own with time. There is no specific cure or treatment- this is a virus and must run its course- in healthy people this takes about 2 weeks Here are some home remedies you can try to help with symptoms and itching: Tylenol or Motrin for fevers Antihistamines for itching- Zyrtec  Topical lotion like Calamine or topical antihistamines like Benadryl cream for the itch Colloidal oatmeal baths to help with itching Sometimes applying cool compresses can help also Stay hydrated to help with fatigue, body aches, fevers DO NOT GIVE CHILDREN ASPIRIN for pain this can cause REYE SYNDROME which can lead to coma and death Populations at greater risk are: Pregnancy women who haven’t have chicken pox before People with Cancer People getting immune treatment for autoimmune disease ‌ Complications in healthy and at risk populations are: Bacterial superinfection from scratching a lesion and introduction bacteria Pneumonia Brain inflammation and swelling called encephalitis If you live in an area with access to the varicella vaccine I highly recommend getting it and making sure children get it as well. Usually given at 12-15 months with catch up schedule for older kids too. ‌ I’m hoping this information is helpful to those who need it!
