Roland’s FP30 is of a similar vintage, and offers up the PHA-4 action, Bluetooth Midi as well, and a host of extremely easy to use features that most pianists will find useful. Thanks for joining us for this much-requested comparison video...let’s get started! Tone Engines & Sound: The ES110 uses the Harmonic Imaging engine, which is an additive synthesis on top of an existing sample of a Kawai EX Concert Grand. Please note this is different than the SK-EX sample set that the new CN / CA pianos have. The ES110 can be connected via wireless bluetooth to a tablet with Kawai’s Virtual Technician, which gives you microscopic control of all of the parameters. It also gives the player 192 polyphony, which is PLENTY for great textured playing at any level of complexity. The external audio jacks are a fantastic feature, meaning you can plug into an amp without defeating the local speakers with the headphone jack. The speakers have been redone on the ES110 vs the ES100, and the bass response has improved, as well as the projection. Overall, the piano and e-piano sounds are rich, dynamic, and well-matched to the onboard speakers. With headphones or an amp, the instrument is truly a professional audio source. The FP30 has a polyphony of 128, so slightly less than the ES110, but speaker size and power are similar. It uses Roland’s Supernatural Sound Engine which gives users the ability to edit their piano playing experience very similarly to Kawai’s Virtual Technician functionality. While the FP30 certainly has a more complex waveform than the FP10, it’s a much better matchup between it and the ES110. The Kawai in certain ranges seems more authentic in its overtones and treble complexity, but generally someone’s preference will come down to whether they like Roland’s overall brighter tone vs Kawai’s slightly more mellow character. Action: The ES110 uses the Responsive Hammer Compact Action, which is the first generation of that type (The KDP110 is equipped with the second generation which comes with the triple sensor). It’s a sturdy, lightweight action which has a textured surface and good repetition speed. The FP30 uses the PHA-4 Ivory-touch action with escapement, which is a pro-level action found in instruments all the way up to (and above) the $2000 price point. This makes the FP30 a substantial value, when you consider it has the triple sensor, escapement, ivory touch and an extremely robust construction quality. The PHA-4 is the exact same action that you’ll find in the FP60, but also the F140r and the RP501r. It has a very well executed ‘faux’ ivory keytop feel and ebony feel on the black keys, a believable escapement simulation, and a rugged physical construction that doesn’t give off unreasonable mechanical sounds or ‘clunks’. Conclusions: This is a genuine toss-up between these fine instruments. I would give the sound of the Kawai higher points, while the action of the Roland is excellent and feels slightly more robust. There are similar levels of onboard sound offerings and editability as well. So like so many things in life, this will come down to individual taste and priorities between touch, sound, and user interface. Thanks for watching!
