Montagu's Harrier - Britain's Rarest Raptor

Like this video and want to support me? It's much appreciated if you do! https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/zeeox This lovely male Montagu's Harrier was seen at the National Trust's Wicken Fen nature reserve in early May. I must admit, I was very sceptical that this was a Montagu's at first, because I was too busy filming it 'for the record' with low-spec equipment in order to have a really good think as to the species. I thought it was 'just' a late-staying male Hen Harrier. Fortunately, my two friends, Will and Nikki, knew better and ID'd the bird with confidence in the field. In fact, it would turn out that there would be a good few random and surprise sightings of 'Monties' around the region during that week, but it does not lessen the amazement we had at discovering (and reporting) the bird in our home county. Less than 10 pairs of Montagu's breed in the UK every year... and so, without doubt, it is one of the country's rarest breeding birds of prey. The RSPB have it at 'Amber' on the conservation importance list and conclude that 'its (UK) status is precarious'. However, it certainly is not breeding at Wicken this year and, being migratory, was almost certainly simply passing through, hopefully to the more established and well known breeding grounds in Norfolk. Suffice to say then, it was a lifer for me and my friends! (Sorry the video goes on a bit... feel free to stop it after about halfway, once you've seen the perching bird close-up.)
