Archaeological itinerary at Ancient Pella, the great Capital of Macedon - Elissabeth B. Tsigarida

Archaeological itinerary at Ancient Pella, the great Capital of Macedon - Elissabeth B. Tsigarida Today Pella is a small village built on a very low hill about 50 km. NW from Thessaloniki, in the hinterland, surrounded by cotton and wheat fields. The landscape of Pella has changed dramatically since antiquity and nowadays it is very difficult even to imagine the fortified coastal city with the port and the shipyard that stood there after the Macedonian king Archelaos transferred the capital from Aigai about 400 BCE. Excavations at this small village, Pella, started in 1914-5 by the Archaeological Society, which was interrupted in the I World War. The excavations started again in 1957 and still continue. So far they have brought to light a great part of the ancient city, which had been characterized by Xenophon as the biggest city of Macedone in the first half of the 4th century BCE: huge and impressive buildings, the buildings of the palace complex, the largest rectangular-shaped agora of antiquity, luxurious private houses, baths, workshops etc, which reflect the wealth and the magnificence of the capital of the Macedonian kingdom after Alexander’s expedition to the east (336-323 BCE) until 168 BCE, when Romans defeated Macedonians at the battle of Pydna and plundered the palace of Pella.
