Fly Tying the Squirmy Wormie with Mike (Wooly Bugged) & Darren (Piscator Flies) Ep 2 Wooly Piscator

Check out the Squirmy Wormie in action in Mike's Genesee river Video -    • Fly Fishing Cold Ones, Genesee River,...   Check out Mike's Wooly Bugged channel on youtube -    / woolybugged   This is Mike's version of the Squirmy Wormy fly and features a high contrast chartreuse green brass bead. You won't make any friends with the fly fishing purists, but the fly speaks for itself in how effectively it catches fish. The pattern is fairly simple, but the Squirmy Wormies can present a little bit of a problem for fly tyers. First off, the material can be a little delicate. I find the strength can vary a little bit package to package, but it is highly elastic and quite lively. Secondly, it may be a little tough to position properly on the hook shank. I've found that adding a base layer of thread, tying the material in at the side and by stretching it while using a pinch wrap help to position the worm in the proper position. Lastly, it doesn't work well with glues and adhesives. Some glues just don't hold on while others will eat through it. It's best just to make a couple secured whip finishes. You'll also want to keep them out of the heat and store them in a cool dark spot. The fly is considered a variation of the San Juan Worm and can be tied in a number of colors. Orange, pink, red and brown are my top choices paired with a contrasting colored bead. Thanks to Mike for the additional footage and photos.
