Visit Waihi, New Zealand. Waihi is New Zealand's 'heart of gold'. It has a long mining history and New Zealand's richest mine. A short drive from Waihi town is the popular and safe surf beach: Waihi beach. A little south of Waihi beach is a small town known as Bowentown, which has spectacular views of Waihi beach from above. And in the opposite direction to Waihi beach is the infamous Karangahake Gorge. My friends and I take a day trip to Waihi. But Waihi definitely deserves at least a weekend of exploration.
