European Brown Hares running around in a field, but what is actually going on here?

This video shows European Brown Hares running around in a field, but what is actually going on here? Filmed on the 28th August 2024. Hello everybody - and thanks for coming back to our channel We are near Burnley in North East Lancashire and we are just into the aftermath of a torrentially-heavy downpour. The air is dry but the vegetation in the fields and most of the animals that have been out in the open have had a proper soaking. At first we see just the one Brown Hare. It is laying down in the grass with just the black-tip of its ears giving away where it is. It quickly scampers away so fast that we can’t track it. And now there are a couple of Hares in the middle of the field. One hare runs off from the other but they soon come back again and feed together for a while, before running off again. This pattern repeats and repeats, before there is a bit of mutual sniffing. There is a full 15 minutes of playing the game of chase-me or leave-me-alone, they take a break from the exercise and hunker down in the short grass to clean their paws. Then they start again, a bit more sniffing then trying to hide in the short grass and doing a bit more feeding. Our camera is picking up some wind noise, and there are other sounds the human ear can pick out. The Hares are noted for their long ears which are tipped with black. They can use the large area if their ears to cool down if they get too hot. They can also swivel their ears around to listen for sounds of danger from any direction. They can definitely hear the sounds of cars a 100 metres away as well as tractors more than 200 metres away. If we move, we move when there is other noise around. In this way, the sound of our footsteps can be disguised by the noise of traffic or tractors. Although happy to feed alone for a while, this hare remains alert – it is constantly looking up and all around and focusing its ears on where sounds of danger may come from. It has been a delight to spend some time here with these hares. They are a lovely animal species – our experience over this summer is that there seem to be more hares around this year than in previous years. Hope we can continue to watch the hares around these parts for many years to come. If you’ve enjoyed this video, we’d love you to click the thumbs up button and give our video a quick like.
