Punjab Ka Sher Dil Jawan Nizam Lohar Kaun Thy? - Podcast With Nasir Baig

Nizam Lohar was born in 1835 at Tarn Taran Sahib in a Punjabi Muslim family during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, which is also referred to as the great Sikh Empire period. When Lohar was 14 years old, British India annexed the Sikh empire. He was a blacksmith by profession and used to stay with his mother and sister. He opposed British governance in India from an early age, but he was advised by his family and friends to stay away from this ideology. Nizam Lohar rebelled against the colonial government which led to bloodshed. Repressive laws of government were defied by him and others in Punjab. He fought against the oppression of the authorities. Rich people and government officers were looted by him. Struggling for freedom he saw himself as a nationalist freedom fighter, but he was labeled as a dacoit by the colonial government. Hatred and opposition were caused among many natives by the British Imperial expansion, including Nizam Lohar. Freedom fighters and their plans to wage a unified struggle against foreign and pro-foreign rule elements gained considerable momentum during this period. In 1868, Nizam got into a heated argument with a British official and felt insulted badly by the words used by that officer for India. As a result, he killed the officer and joined Jeet Singh and Malkeet Singh, both prominent Babbar Akali supporters. In addition to producing and providing weapons for the movement, Lohar attacked government officials and pro-government rich people and distributed their money and valuables among the local poor people, just like Robin Hood - a heroic outlaw in English legend. Due to the denouncement of his activities of meeting and supporting rebels of the 'Tehreek-e-Jang-e-Azadi' or the Independence Movement, the British police started strict surveillance of him. Due to this surveillance, Lohar often stayed outside of his home and sometimes evaded the authorities by using the Changa Manga jungle (named after the two dacoits Changa and Manga who escaped British prison and disappeared in the forest, looting travelers) as a safe haven. Nizam Lohar was also known as Nizam Dakoo. He is known for his methodology of resistance against British Rule in India. Police surrounded Nizam's house based on information from one of his friends, i.e., Sooja. Subsequently, there was a crossfire between the police and Nizam for about an hour, resulting in Nizam's death.
