Hurricane Florence ON a Sailboat | Anchoring and Mooring for a Storm

Gary E. Brown has rode out several hurricanes on his sailboat on a mooring in St. Martin. He tells you how he did it, survived, and escaped major damage to his sailing boats. Gary E. Brown is the editor of All at Sea magazine and has been sailing the Caribbean for decades. This is a controversial practice, but it is a great story. Captain Linus Wilson who speaks to Gary, argues that you should never stay on your boat in a hurricane. He says that any benefits of riding out the storm is outweighed by the human and economics costs of staying on the sailboat and risking injury or worse to the crew. Sailing La Vagabonde recently spoke of their hurricane plan to stay in the hurricane belt for the height of hurricane season in "Why we Chose to Sail during Hurricane Season! (Hurricane Gordon & Florence)"    • Why we Chose to Sail during Hurricane...   You will see many wrecked catamarans and sailboats from hurricanes Maria and Irma. We show the forecast of the major hurricane Florence from Windy.com using several different weather models. Florence is headed for South & North Carolina. NASA Photo Credit: The Atlantic basin was relatively quiet for much of August 2018, but September brought a surge in storm activity. On September 9, 2018, Florence, Isaac, and Helene were all spinning in the basin. The trio of storms is visible in this image, captured that day by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite NASA Earth Observatory image by Joshua Stevens, using VIIRS data from the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership.
