What is Delta 8 THC?

Just like CBD and D9THC, it’s produced naturally by the cannabis plant, but in very small amounts. However, the majority of the commercially available D8THC is derived from hemp-derived CBD. To quote Dr. Mechoulam, "Delta-8-THC is an isomer of delta-9-THC, the major natural constituent of Cannabis from which it differs only in the position of the double bond.” Delta-9-THC = C21H30O2 Delta-8-THC = C21H30O2 D-8-THC IS psychoactive – But apparently less psychoactive than THC. Many adult users report Delta-8 THC to provide similar relief to Delta-9 THC without the adverse side effects. However, that’s not always the case. The process of converting CBD to D8THC is called Isomerization and involves refluxing CBD in an organic solvent, with an acid that serves as a catalyst. The reaction is typically run for 60–90 min and in the end, you’re basically closing the ring on the CBD molecule. Is D8THC legal? The 2018 Farm Bill (federal) legalized all hemp production and everything in the composition of hemp other than Delta-9 THC, of which hemp must contain below 0.3%, including Delta-8 THC, are legal. Under state jurisdiction, however, the legality varies. However, the DEA may be coming after Delta-8 THC. On August 20th, they released the "Implementation of the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018", which would make the production of Delta-8 THC illegal. The proposed regulations would label all synthetically derived THC’s as schedule 1 controlled substances. So for now, yes, Delta 8 THC is legal (I think lol this is not legal advice so do not do anything based on this video) Is Delta 8 THC safe? Delta 8 THC is not approved by the FDA Chemists are sounding the alarm after finding several unidentified compounds in products labeled as delta-8-THC. Hudalla, C (President of ProVerde Labs): “My concern is that we have no idea what these products are.” They’re testing thousands of products at ProVerde labeled delta-8-THC via chromatographic methods with UV or mass spec detection, and they have confirmed they equipment is up to date. “So far, I have not seen one that I would consider a legitimate delta-8-THC product… There’s some delta-8 in there, but there’s very frequently up to 30 [chromatographic] peaks that I can’t identify…” Coffin, M (CSO at Elevation Distro): “I’m less concerned with traditional THC isomers than I am of the ubiquitous unknowns.” To convert CBD to D-8THC, it requires mixing CBD with a solvent and strong acid over a short period of time. Hudulla, C: “These are pretty aggressive synthetic conditions that use strong acids… In a pharmaceutical environment, PhD chemists ensure that products don’t include harmful unconsumed reactants. But nobody is measuring the pH of delta-8 products or testing for strong acids and residual metals that are left behind.” Boyar, K (Staff research associate at UC San Diego’s Medicinal Cannabis Research Center): “It is possible to separate delta-8-THC from unwanted reaction leftovers or by-products, but most people are not actually taking the time to distill it or use chromatography to do so.” This article was written last year so hopefully practices have improved since then. But at the end of the day, it really boils down to is: 1. are these companies separating the end by products from THC8 effectively. because, when synthesized and isolated properly, Delta 8 THC has a relative good safety profile and potential therapeutic use. 2. Make sure you’re selective on which ∆8-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-8-THC) gummies, vape products, etc, you purchase. 3. Please do your research and be informed on the products you are consuming. There are still plenty of adverse reports noted with delta8 so I wouldn’t take it so lightly. 4. Look to see how the companies are synthesizing and separating their products. What steps and added care they are taking to assure high quality D8THC!
