ABOUT THE SCORE: For this 1987 Jacques Cousteau collaboration, composer John Scott recorded a large-scale work with the Munich Symphony (as opposed to his usual go-to Royal Philharmonic at the time), and the resulting music is most impressive. Anchored by a surging main theme heard immediately at the onset in this suite, the music cycles through impressionistic musical portraitures of the various marine species encountered in the Sea of Cortez (and its colorful human history), resulting in a wealth of ideas over a mere 25 minute runtime. Notable is a wonderful motif for Mantra Rays (2:38 on English Horn, then rapturously recapitulated by trumpet and strings thereafter - such buoyant and uplifting music!) and darker woodwind textures expressing the danger the marine life face from human activities in the region. A surging rendition of the title theme follows, which includes a breathtaking moment for fluttering, swirling winds (11:49) atop the low, resonant celli that are among John Scott’s orchestrational hallmarks. 13:57 sees an extremely colorful send off to the episode that then segues into the end title, which carries out a soaring rendition of Scott’s “Rediscovery Series” signature theme he wrote for the overarching series of docs (14:57). A glorious theme it is indeed - redolent with a sense of discovery and bright-eyed optimism for the boundless natural world. One cannot help but feel it is a perfect musical encapsulation of the way Cousteau himself must have viewed nature. This is quintessential documentary scoring, and another testament to John Scott’s endless creativity and originality as a composer.
